THE FIT + IN™ ORIGIN
When one size does not fit all
How an overstimulating workout class ignited a mission to bring evidence-based sensory standards to boutique fitness.
Fit + In™ was born when Founder + CEO Emily Shepard attended a boutique fitness class filled with blaring music, harsh overhead lighting, complex equipment setups, and a rigid, one-size-fits-all class format. The overstimulating environment instantly turned what should have been an empowering workout into an overwhelming sensory nightmare.
Convinced that she—a neurodivergent adult—was the problem, Emily vented to friends, who gently reminded her that a truly skilled instructor's job is to make class feel safe, adaptable, and approachable for every body in the room. This prompted Emily to search for sensory-friendly fitness options across New York City where her sensitivities would be accounted for—but she came up empty.
That was the moment Fit + In™ was sparked. Rather than building a single physical space from scratch, Emily set out to pioneer an evidence-based certification program for boutique studios and instructors to learn how to adapt their environments for neurodivergent, sensory-sensitive, and chronically ill movers. By pairing instructor training with science-backed environmental audits, Fit + In™ is creating a trusted directory of accredited studios where movers can find classes that work for them, rather than in spite of them.
Fast forward to today: Fit + In™ is establishing gold-standard sensory care across indoor movement spaces. Grounded in occupational therapy research and developed alongside leading experts in sensory processing disorder (SPD), we are actively preparing to launch our core 5-module certification course—covering everything from the biology of nervous system states to thermal dynamics, acoustic controls, and multi-modal instruction.
